I don’t buy the $1.00 soft roll which would be perfect for my homemade submarine sandwich (which would save me so much time and effort)

Until I come to my senses, here is a soft bun made at home.

Pain Français Recipe (Julia Childs)

5 cups bread flour
2 cups cool water (about 78 F)
One .6-ounce cube compressed (fresh) yeast
2 1/2 teaspoons salt

25 Minutes into a 425° Oven
